It's all disheartening.Daylle Deanna Schwartzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01445486103480238038noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6601826374403440725.post-75345963298997418602008-05-06T09:11:00.000-04:002008-05-06T09:11:00.000-04:002008-05-06T09:11:00.000-04:00Oh Daylle, where, where to begin? I was going to ...Oh Daylle, where, where to begin? I was going to start by saying you could always vote Republican and avoid the current mess altogether, but somehow I don't think you'd find that an attractive option!

We don't live in a democracy, contrary to what lots of people think. We live in a democratic republic --- which is why you get stuff like the electoral college, and why we elect representatives and Senators. The founding fathers looked to England's House of Commons and House of Lords for inspiration, but wanting to avoid the connotations of titles, etc. decided to balance the representation by population by having two senators from each state. Thus the reputation (whether you deem it deserved or not) of the Senate as the more "statesmanly" of the two bodies.

Our elected representatives ostensibly do the people's will, but the system envisioned by our founding fathers also provides them the opportunity to do what they think is best for us, should we be ignorant of that. :-) That's why we keep hearing things like "I've got a lot of great ideas...the country just can't afford them" and "my husband is going to make you work for the greater good."

I don't really think you want to be a super delegate. All the pandering and jockeying would make you sick, or at least cynical and jaded. Ultimately, the people will decide in November, and they're usually pretty good at doing so,the lack of decorum and good sportsmanship in the candidates notwithstanding.Betsynoreply@blogger.com
